JOB SUMMARY The Department of Public Works (DPW), Center Camp Shop Steward will Manage, organize, inventory, and maintain the Center Camp Tool Container on Playa. The primary responsibilities of this role are to keep tools in working order, batteries charged, and hardware, blades, consumables and safety equipment stocked, organized and available to the crew. This position works with both the DPW Center Camp Construction Crew and the Center Camp Operations Manager and teams, assists with purchasing, clerical needs, maintains the construction-site common areas and is the liaison with the fluffers for staff support. This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: From August - September : Full-Time, Exempt , based in Black Rock City, Nevada . The deadline to apply for this role is 5:00 pm Pacific on May 20th. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Daily Operations (70%) Maintain an existing tool inventory detailing current tool status (working/repair), adding new tools or removing dead tools from the rotation as needed. Maintain a 20’ shop container and build out storage to create an efficient work space Maintain an existing organized supply storage box Maintain records of all the lock combos and keys ; Track and maintain a cohesive Tool Numbering System Keep the shop spaces organized, clean (as possible) and well-stocked with consumables Provide guidance to the crew via creating or using signage and making announcements on best processes and procedures to keeping a well-organized shop & tool library Keep an accurate inventory, track all equipment as it is loaned out, inspect and return to inventory as it is returned and red tagging for repair or replacement as necessary. Ensure all checked out tools have any required safety equipment available for the operator. Asset Maintenance (10%) Understand and use basic tool repair and cleaning Send tools in for repair as needed. Track progress of repair and return to service. Keep existing library of tool manuals up to date, organized and accessible Documentation/Purchasing (10%) Maintain ongoing records of inventory and provide a closing inventory list to management at the end of the season Assist with purchasing requests as needed Maintain current notes on the build and from meetings and make changes to the SOP for the following year Possibly assist with role call and time tracking for staff Housekeeping (5%) Maintain tidiness and organization in the common areas and educate the crew when more support is needed in this area Work with the Center Camp Ops Team and Construction Crew to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans Communicate with staff services such as the Fluffers when supplies are needed Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%) Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations. Participate in Meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence. Read, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards. Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management. Perform other duties as assigned. LEARNING AND TEACHING Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties. Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes. Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested. Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. QUALIFICATIONS Required Working knowledge of standard construction tools and hardware; ability to read instructions manuals to expand basic maintenance education and practices Very strong organizational skills, with the ability to create, nearly from scratch, a highly functional and intuitive storage space where groups of tools, materials, and expendables can be found and identified easily. Have a curious and meticulous mind that proactively seeks answers and a willingness to learn, improve and follow through on recurring tasks Good natured, attentive, possesses integrity and ability to manage own time effectively. Ability to prioritize and complete tasks based on the needs of the crew and according to the timeline expectations as provided by management. Ability to think ahead to the needs of the upcoming projects and prepare tools and supplies Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times. Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada Preferred Basic First Aid Knowledge Carpentry skills OSHA training and construction safety protocols It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture. REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Valid driver’s license and a good driving record COMPENSATION Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position: From August - September is $15.00 to $16.00 per hour . PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required. On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
